Chapter 22

Lately, Matt found himself wondering whether he and Isabel should simply have eloped. Isabel wanted a fancy wedding, and he loved her, but the wedding preparations were driving him crazy. She was always hauling him someplace to look at flower arrangements or a dress or a caterer. Last week, she needed his opinion on wedding invitations. Today she was fretting over the guest list.

Like he cared. She should just invite the people she wanted to see and print out the labels. Intellectually, he understood she wanted his buy-in on the whole project. She was desperate for reassurance that he loved her, but she had transformed into a bridezilla, obsessing over every detail. And what was the rush? Everyone else he knew had taken months to plan their weddings. Even his first fiancée…

Maybe the problem was him. He went through this once before with Evie. The flowers, the rings, the whole enchilada. And then three days before the wedding, she ran off with her lit prof. Add in a mother who walked away from her marriage and sons, and it was no surprise he was skittish about women.

Skittish—what an understatement! After Evie's betrayal, Matt hadn't even looked at a woman for five years. Of course, immediately taking a job in Zaire helped. Try finding time or opportunity for romance when developing a copper mine. And then Isabel happened.

Matt straightened his back. He had promised to wed Isabel, and he intended to do just that. He glanced over at Isabel and realized she had stopped talking about the guest list and was glaring at him.

"You and your father and your best man need to get fitted for tuxes."

Sheesh! Tuxes? Did she think they were getting married in Casino Royale and he was James Bond? Actually, the James Bond thing was flattering, that whole license to kill thing and all those cool gadgets…

"I asked who you want to send invitations to." Isabel acted as if their talk yesterday never happened.

"Sorry, angel. I was thinking about work." Better a lie than being ridiculed for the truth.

"Are you listening to me now?" The tone of her voice implied he'd better be doing just that.

"You want to know who I want to invite to our wedding..." His voice trailed off as he thought. "Well, my best friend Zach—"

"Of course, he's your best man, and he and his wife will be coming. But who else? You can't expect me to be addressing cards two days before the wedding. I'm so busy."

And who suggested the date for the wedding? But Matt didn't dare say that out loud. Isabel was so high-strung that sometimes it seemed he was marrying a thunderstorm, not a woman.

"The names, Matt."

"My dad."

"Duh. And your mom. What's her address?"

He shook his head. "I have no idea."

"What?" Isabel stared at him as if a tree had sprouted out of his head. "You don't know where she is? What kind of son are you?"
